Starting your first adult coloring book? These 5 techniques will take your pages from “meh” to “wow” — even if you’ve never picked up a colored pencil before.
1. Start Light, Build Dark
Always start with lighter colors and gradually add darker shades. You can always make something darker, but you can’t undo a heavy hand. Light pressure, multiple layers.
2. Use the Paper Texture
Color in small circles instead of back-and-forth strokes. This fills in the paper texture more evenly and creates a smoother, more professional look.
3. Blend with What You Have
You don’t need expensive blending pencils. A white colored pencil works great for blending. Or use a colorless blender pencil if you want to invest a little more.
4. Leave Some White Space
Not every inch needs color. Strategic white space makes your finished pieces look more intentional and artistic. Think of it as giving your design room to breathe.
5. Protect Your Work
Place a sheet of scrap paper under your hand while coloring. This prevents smudging and oils from your skin affecting the paper. Simple but game-changing.
